LAURIE LIPTON - THE SLEEP OF REASON

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

Laurie Lipton - Love Bite

Laurie Lipton is passionate about drawing. She combines charcoal and graphite on the same surface. The forms utilize the complete spectrum of contrast, light to dark, achieving a surreal quality. Lipton claims influence in Goya clearly indicated in the drawing above. “Love Bite” is the artist’s take on the painting “Saturn Devouring His Son” completed by Francisco de Goya in 1824. Both pieces deal with time, a statement on age and the refusal of being supplanted.
Head over to the website of Laurie Lipton. There are many originals available as well as limited digital prints and lithographs. Her show “The Sleep of Reason” at Strychnin Gallery in Berlin opens this Friday.

NEDSK8 - GROUNDBREAKING

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

A huge day here in Nederland, Colorado. The groundbreaking took place for a local skatepark. It’s nice to live in a place where the people are are so unrealistic. Time and again it allows for amazing things like this to occur. Hats off to the Nedsk8 board, the Tony Hawk Foundation and all who have supported this project. The park is set to open in October.

ACTROID - DOUKOKU

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

Singularity appears to be approaching at an accelerated rate. The Japanese firm, “Kokoro” claims that it takes about ten seconds for recognition to occur and that soon they expect to extend that time to ten minutes. This is going to change the way that we interact with each other in dramatic fashion. “Oh I’m sorry, I didn’t realize that you were real.”

Ian Millard - 0 percent APR

Ian Millard is set to release his first screen print tomorrow at noon eastern time. “0% APR” was inspired by the unreasonable amount of credit card offers that we all receive in the mail. Millard worked with Tripp over at Taboot Printing on the production. The print exists in two editions, 3 on birch and 25 on paper. Each piece is unique, they have been hand worked by the artist. The paper edition will be available via this link.

RAY CAESAR - IN THE GARDEN OF MOONLIGHT

Monday, June 16th, 2008

Ray Caesar - Madre

Ray Caesar is busy preparing his solo show scheduled to debut in less than two weeks at the Jonathan Levine Gallery in NYC. Not much has been released about the show as of yet. It is safe to say that there will be plenty of doll-like girls with mutations and amazing tailors in this most recent body of work. In the meantime, head over and read the biography of Ray Caesar… did you know that he is a dog?

ANISH KAPOOR - PAST PRESENT FUTURE

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

Anish Kapoor - S-Curve

Anish Kapoor, arguably the best living sculptor on the planet, is having a retrospective of sorts at the ICA in Boston. Fourteen works created over the past three decades will be on view at the exhibition. “Past Present Future” marks the first U.S. museum survey of Kapoor’s work in more than 15 years. Putting on an exhibition of work from Anish Kapoor is no easy task. If it weren’t for the monumental scale of the sculpture we’d be seeing his work in a different museum every season.
At least everyone can enjoy his public work. Just ask the people in Chicago, they call it the bean, everywhere else it is known as “Cloud Gate”.

OLAFUR ELIASSON - TAKE YOUR TIME

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

Olafur Eliasson - Your Strange Certainty Still Kept

Olafur Eliasson creates stunning installations that encompass his audience in a world that is at odds with standard physics. Eliasson plays with our expectations by misinforming our perception. In “Your Strange Certainty Still Kept” (above) drops of falling water are pulsed with light from a strobe that leaves the viewer certain that gravity has been suspended. In “Reversed Waterfall” (below) strong pumps are called on to keep our 1 gee at bay.
Artist is certainly an appropriate description for Eliasson but some may also categorize him as scientist or even magician. Olafur Eliasson’s exhibit, “Take Your Time” is on view at the MOMA and P.S.1 through the end of June and all are encouraged to make the trip.

DAVID CHOE - CONVERSE AD

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

David Choe - Converse Ad

Converse has been running some nice ads from David Choe over the past few months. This one has the tagline, “I painted this last week with 10 cans of black spray paint and 1 can of yellow. It’s what I look like on the inside.”

Choe is gearing up for the world premiere of, “Dirty Hands: The Art & Crimes of David Choe“. The documentary is set to open in Los Angeles on June 21st.

NOAM GONICK & LUIS JACOB - THE WILDFLOWERS OF MANITOBA

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

Noam Gonick and Juis Jacob - Wildflowers of Manitoba

The University of British Columbia has put together a show commemorating the 40th anniversary of 1968. The works selected are all reminiscent of that turbulent decade and fall under the theme of the show, Idyll.
The installation above is titled, “The Wildflowers of Manitoba” and was created by Noam Gonick and Luis Jacob. This work was first exhibited at the Montreal Biennale in 2007. The three channel video installation shows four men living the wild life at a survivalist camp on Lake Winnipeg during the summer of 2006. The videos are projected on the inside panels of a minimally furnished geodesic dome. Some form of hippie virtual reality has been achieved; I wouldn’t have thought it possible.

Margie Schnibbe - Today is a Good Day

Tomorrow is the last day to head out to Circus Gallery and view the first LA solo exhibition from Margie Schnibbe. Schnibbe aka Vena Virago creates installations that also act as sets for adult films that she writes and directs. All artists have heard it at one time or another, it’s good to have something to fall back on.
