MARK WAGNER - MY PORTFOLIO

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

Mark Wagner is preparing to open a solo show at Pavel Zoubok. The exhibit, “My Portfolio” is full of Wagner’s signature collages made exclusively from dollar bills. This show is dropping at an interesting time. While the art world has been immersed in images of politicians it seems appropriate to go back to this country’s initial leader.

GREG “CRAOLA” SIMKINS - IT WANDERS EAST

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

Greg “Craola” Simkins is having his first solo exhibition on the East coast. “It Wanders East” opens September 6th at the Joshua Liner Gallery in NYC. Here’s the word from the Simkins camp.

“In this world, a boy sits in his newly demolished home, dreaming of his escape. Messenger candles from the Baron dot the land. Good fruits accompany moths and butterflies, while snowmen befriend various birds and creatures from the menagerie of Simkins’ imagination. The alchemist’s eggs appear as vessels containing new life spilling out of their cracked surfaces, while clouds containing the secrets of time’s past fill the sky.”

This is the first stage of the exhibition. “It Wanders West” opens November 6th at Gallery Nineteen Eighty Eight in LA.

CHRISTO AND JEANNE-CLAUDE - OVER THE RIVER

Monday, August 25th, 2008

Christo and Jeanne-Claude are bringing their next large scale effort to Colorado. Over the River is planned for the summer of 2012 and will be exhibited for two weeks. The project consists of nearly six miles of silvery translucent fabric suspended horizontally over various parts of the Arkansas River spanning the forty mile stretch between Salida and Cañon City. “Over the River” will be viewable from two vantage points. Motorists will be able to witness it’s grandeur from US-50 and rafters are encouraged to float directly under the fabric panels.

The methods that Christo and Jean-Claude employ to produce their astonishing exhibits are often misrepresented by the press fueling ignorance in the public. The only way to combat this unfortunate inevitability is through education. On their website the artists have compiled a list of common errors attributed to their lives and work. They also lead into the process with informative lectures and exhibitions in the area. They have already started this in Colorado. Check here to find upcoming events organized for “Over the River”.

Salida is only 3 hours from our location in Nederland. We are already planning to work on the installation of this monumental artwork. You can get involved as well, sign up to receive updates on progress and information on opportunities as they arise. See you on the river!

TIM KNOWLES - TREE DRAWINGS

Sunday, August 24th, 2008

Tim Knowles is always coming up with great new projects. In “Tree Drawings” he attaches markers to branches allowing trees, with help from the wind, to create. The recordings reveal something different about each tree.

Be sure to have a look at Tim’s website for more.

DAVID BYRNE - LOCK IT DOWN AND TUNE IT UP

Saturday, August 23rd, 2008

David Byrne is prolific across many media. Recently he completed a project in cooperation with Pace Wildenstein and the NYC Department of Transportation. Nine powder coated steel bike racks were fabricated from Byrne’s drawings and installed throughout the city. Each piece is themed after it’s location “The Chelsea” (above) and “The Villager” (below) are prime examples. From the Upper West side down to Tribeca all nine locations are listed on the map at David Byrne’s website. Fill the tires, oil the chain and check them all out.

The former front man for the Talking Heads also recently converted the NYC Battery Maritime Building into a musical instrument.

He walks you through it in the video below from Boing Boing.

DENIS DARZACQ - HYPER

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

“Hyper”, the latest photographic series from Denis Darzacq is unquestionably engaging. The emotion of the image changes depending on the actions of the models. Sometimes they feel like life caught at it’s most dangerous and often the poses emulate the serene joy of success.

Darzacq has dealt with these floating bodies before in the street series “La Chute”. For “Hyper” he has taken to the shops and breathed new life and color into a great idea.

For the complete series and more float on over to Denis Darzacq’s portfolio.

MATTHEW BARNEY - BLACK METAL PIG ROAST

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

Recently Matthew Barney opened his studio in Long Island City for a free black metal pig roast. Six bands rocked the crowd for the duration of this primitive gathering. Barney was on hand roasting and carving the sacrificial offering.

I have a lot of respect for the work of Matthew Barney. The heavies of the art community may balk at this recent action but he’s reduced me to genuflection. This dark gesture was the happening of the season.

Found via Cremaster Fanatic. Head over to Jae Saam Trio’s photo set of the event for more.

BETH CAVENER STICHTER - ANIMAL BODY HUMAN SPACE

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

The sculptures of Beth Cavener Stichter hold attention with an eerie intrigue. She proffers animal forms actuated with human emotional concerns. The hybrid as a theme has been overdone in recent years to the point of potentially drying out the well. Cavener Stichter has entered into the discourse with a new light, one that has the potential to shine throughout a career.

The sculptures do not display an overall polish. Some areas are defined more than others like the drawings of an old master. These physical embellishments mirror her psychological concerns of things left unsaid.

Beth Cavener Stichter has an aggressive program of workshops planned over the next few years. Check her schedule to see when she’s coming to a town near you.

HEMMENDORFF - HAMBURGER SHOE

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Swedish artist Hemmendorff was commissioned by Nike to interpret one of their shoes. As a medium he chose “the most powerful, most durable and most delicious material known to man: hamburger.” Bon Appetit!

Thanks to Wendell for the tip.
