LOOK INTO MY OWL

A series of photographs from Juergen Teller is currently showing at Lehmann Maupin in NYC. The work was initially commissioned by the French magazine, Paradis and will be encapsulated into a limited edition book at the end of the month.

The images were accomplished in a single session after hours at the Musee du Louvre in Paris. Juergen Teller had worked with models Charlotte Rampling and Raquel Zimmermann previously but perhaps not in such an extraordinary setting.

Visitors to art museums expect to be confronted with bare flesh so the concept seems almost wholesome. The sanctity of the location begs for a large crew and sophisticated lighting scheme. Teller took the opposite approach, meandering alone with his subjects taking candid photos complete with harsh flash and crooked horizon. The guerrilla approach captured the sensation of disbelief from the participants and positions the viewer as accomplice to their sublime prank.

TATE ETC., the magazine published by the museum offers compelling content including the “Poem of the Month”. This year, Britain’s Poetry Society is curating the selections which will be added to the website. A writer is paired with a work from the collection to produce a poem based on the art.

This month the contribution comes from noted author Elaine Feinstein responding to the R.B. Kitaj painting, “Isaac Babel Riding with Budyonny” (below). Here’s an excerpt from her poem.

“This is the euphoria of Revolution:
Ukraine in flames, the air a grey smoke.
Ash beneath dark skies. From a horse’s white rump,
the colours turn in a kaleidoscope.”

The forward-looking, treacly sweet magazine Hi-Fructose has assembled a swank group show. Included in the exhibition are mellifluous efforts from Tin (above) and Jeff Soto (below). Cheers to Atta and Annie for getting together such a rich collection. The primarily pop-surrealist pageant has been staged at Copro Nason Gallery with an opening reception July 12th from 8-11:30pm.

The Laguna Art Museum is raising the brow with their current exhibition, “In the Land of Retinal Delights: The Juxtapoz Factor”. Over the past 15 years Juxtapoz Magazine has become a criterion for contemporary art. In fact, Juxtapoz is now the most widely read art magazine in America.
One hundred and fifty artists that have been featured in the magazine are included in this epic exhibition. A deep bow to Robert Williams and all those involved in Juxtapoz over the years. Special thanks are also due to the exhibit curator Meg Linton and director Bolton Colburn of the Laguna Art Museum.
