CATHY LO - THE HUMAN EQUATION

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

Cathy Lo - Insomnium

Cathy Lo
is interested in what makes her Cathy Lo. In the series “Aesthetic Compounds” she has developed a complex system for defining her various states. The compositions relate to the viewer as beautiful designs culled from very personal imagery. These silk screened canvases have been organized like equations. Consistent syntax admits her audience into a show of personal material and memory that would otherwise remain inaccessible.

GREG “CRAOLA” SIMKINS - FINDER’S KEEPERS

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

Greg Craola Simkins - Finder's Keepers

This beautiful print has been extricated from the fantastic mind of Greg “Craola” Simkins. “Finder’s Keepers” is a 16 x 20″ giclée on velvet cotton rag. The content consists of Marcel, a mixed up sheep that lives at the bottom of a well and has a rather unusual diet. He can be found and kept over at Zero Friends.

STEF - BABELON

Stef - Babelon

Stef has rolled out an elegant new screen print. “Babelon” measures approximately 20 x 14″ and is available in a minuscule edition of 8. The prints exhibit slight variation due to the two color spray hand finishing. The tower keeps growing. Head over to Hoodacious and get yours before someone else does.

IAN MILLARD - 0% APR

Monday, June 16th, 2008

Ian Millard - 0 percent APR

Ian Millard is set to release his first screen print tomorrow at noon eastern time. “0% APR” was inspired by the unreasonable amount of credit card offers that we all receive in the mail. Millard worked with Tripp over at Taboot Printing on the production. The print exists in two editions, 3 on birch and 25 on paper. Each piece is unique, they have been hand worked by the artist. The paper edition will be available via this link.

RAY CAESAR - IN THE GARDEN OF MOONLIGHT

Monday, June 16th, 2008

Ray Caesar - Madre

Ray Caesar is busy preparing his solo show scheduled to debut in less than two weeks at the Jonathan Levine Gallery in NYC. Not much has been released about the show as of yet. It is safe to say that there will be plenty of doll-like girls with mutations and amazing tailors in this most recent body of work. In the meantime, head over and read the biography of Ray Caesar… did you know that he is a dog?

EMORY DOUGLAS - REVOLUTIONARY ART

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

Emory Douglas - The Black Panther - September 1974

Unfortunately this show slipped under the radar for me. Gladly, the magazine, “Art in America” produced an article in their current issue highlighting the exhibition that ended in February.
Emory Douglas was the visual leader of the Black Panthers from 1967-84. His politically charged artwork graced the pages of “The Black Panther” the movement’s newspaper. Douglas met up with Huey Newton and Bobby Seale when the two were trying to get the newspaper off the ground. Newton and Seale were designing “The Black Panther” with awkwardly drawn headlines in pencil. Emory Douglas stepped in and was quickly granted the title Minister of Culture and Revolutionary Artist of the Black Panther Party. For almost two decades he shifted opinion and led the movement, visually.
The impact of the Douglas designs did not stop with the decline of the movement. Today, many top artists make depictions that are obvious copies of the work of Emory Douglas. True, they may be selling something and playing at revolution, but at least the spirit of these early designs lives on. Perhaps that kid with the faux revolutionary t-shirt or sticker will be flipping through a book or looking online and find that the symbols used today actually had real world meaning. For more information about the highly influential work of Emory Douglas, please visit the LA MOCA website. Many artworks are available to view there with a bit of text on each piece from the artist.

BAST - NOSE CANDY

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

Bast - Video 8

The Brooklynite Gallery is opening in grand style with a print exhibition from BAST. The show, “Nose Candy”, offers new works exploring the theme of jewelry. BAST has a love for confusion, his foray into bling will be utter chaos. I can’t wait.
BAST doesn’t offer preview images for his shows. The image above, “Video 8″ silkscreen embellished with spray paint, is representative of recent work.
This is the inaugural exhibit for the Brooklynite. The new building was designed by the gallery’s director, Rae McGrath. The manifesto for this new space gave me the impression that the folks in charge have seen enough art to be certain when something works.
