JERMAINE ROGERS – STUDIO VISIT

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

This week I took some time out to visit with a good friend and amazing artist Jermaine Rogers. His studio is located in the halcyonic town of Manitou Springs, Colorado. Nestled between Pikes Peak and the Garden of the Gods, Manitou is steeped in natural beauty and long considered sacred by the locals. A perfect setting to create.

Jermaine Rogers - Studio Visit - 012 - 2009

Each weekend Jermaine’s studio “DERO 72″ transforms into a gallery and opens to the public. It is here that you can catch up with his current exploits and possibly pick up something choice from the past.

The gallery has a warm atmosphere reminiscent of a bazaar with deep area rugs and comfortable furniture. It is situated in the midst of Manitou Spring’s arcade boasting indoor and open air games.

JERMAINE ROGERS – DERO EAST & MY BROTHER WAS A HERO

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008

I just got off the phone with Jermaine Rogers. We were discussing the excellent serigraphs that he is releasing this week. You can expect a steady selection of art print releases from Jermaine’s studio over the next few months. We will keep you updated here at L.I.M.O.

Jermaine Rogers - DERO: East

“DERO: East” (above) informs us that DERO activity is a world wide phenomena. These iconic characters are seen demonstrating an ability to blend to their surroundings. Panda DERO, that is so cool. Keep an eye out for other directions of the compass.

Jermaine Rogers - My Brother was a hero...

“My Brother was a hero…” (above) and “My Brother was a hero… VARIANT” below mark an interesting experiment for the artist. In recent years the idea of the print variant has become popular with collectors as a way to obtain very rare examples. This exciting practice usually involves the use of ink colors and/or paper stock at variance with the original edition. In his “Hero” pairing, Rogers has strayed from the material variant into a conceptual deviation. Each of the prints in this parable represent dissenting viewpoints. Choose a side or collect the set.

All three prints will be available at this link on Friday December 12th at a random time between 11AM & 3PM MST.

MICHELANGELO PISTOLETTO – TRANS BORDER TRANS LIMIT TRANS GRESSION

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

The large silkscreen prints of Michelangelo Pistoletto make up the current show at Luhring Augustine.

Michelangelo Pistoletto - Through the Fence - Him and Her

The surface for these prints is mirror polished stainless steel. Pistoletto has been experimenting with mirrors since the early 1960’s. His technique has risen to the point of nearly flawless representation leaving the focus of these works to their content.

Michelangelo Pistoletto - Video Shoot

The life sized characters that make up this current work invite the viewer into their world, literally. It’s not often that the gaze in a work of art is your own. This addition of the audience to the picture plane operates in several ways from the feeling of being watched to the keeping of unusual company.

KOJO GRIFFIN – SWING STATES OF MIND

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008

Kojo Griffin is displaying a diverse selection of his artworks from the past eight years. “Swing States of Mind” is the current show at Quality Pictures in Portland.

Kojo Griffin - Untitled - Man with Note - Man at Desk

The nature of Griffin’s earlier work (from the first half of this decade) was mainly narrative. Against stark fields of color anthropomorphic figures were depicted in moments of social conflict. The exaggerated facial features of the masked characters offered a heightened sense of humanity to the dramatic scenarios.

Kojo griffin - Untitled 2002

The latest paintings from Kojo Griffin mark both departure and return. For a while he broke away from figurative work in favor of abstract concerns. The characters are back and noticeably changed from new experience. In these recent pieces the living forms appear as apparitions dominated by the environments they inhabit. This focal reversal of form and field arrives as a welcome evolution extending the possibilities for future endeavors.

DAVID CHOE – NEW PRINTS COMING SOON

Friday, November 21st, 2008

David Choe has a couple of prints in production and they should be ready to drop before the end of the year.

David Choe - Exodus from Land of Play

“Exodus from Land of Play” (above) is a 13 color serigraph depicting the 5 x 6 foot painting that was recently on view as part of the “Outsiders” show that Lazarides Gallery held on the Lower East side. Here is a bit of insight from the artist on this piece.

“in the land of play ,the skies rain fried cheese bread, there is non-stop fun and unlimited freedom, children are encouraged to commit acts of vandalism, fight, drink beer out of unicorn horns, smoke cigars that turn into bubblicious, and gamble and never lose, nuns show you their shaved vaginas and preach, up all night , sleep all day, where everyone plays and never works, where a kid can be a kid, and also where a man can also behave like a kid, do what you want, whenever you want there’s no responsibilities, no cops, no rules, no repercussions, and no consequences to any of your actions, but all good things must come to an end, I won’t tell you what happened, but everyone has to leave immediately, get the fuck out now! So our heroine and androgynous vamp, donning royal robes and Axl Rose gear, leads a parade of donkey eared miscreants and ne’er –do wells armed with customized super soakers filled with gummy worm juice and milk from coco crispies (I won’t name them all, but Darth Nihilus, razorback, and Beta ray Bill are up in the mix), out of Cockaigne, maybe to wander the earth forever?”

Dave may be losing his mind but it’s a fun slide.

David Choe - Dark Circles

“Dark Circles (Get Some Rest)” (above) will be the first print from one of Choe’s watercolors. The fine art giclée is also expected to be released before 2008 is up.

JUSTIN HAMPTON – THAT ONE – HISTORY EDITION

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

Our good friend and all around cool cat Justin Hampton has dropped a piece of history on NOWhere Limited. This is a 5 color serigraph on 100 lb. acid free stock and limited to only 44 signed and numbered pieces. The art print will be available for purchase at this link on Friday November 14th at 3PM EST.

Justin Hampton - That One - History Edition

There is some interesting ‘history’ to this print. In 2004 Justin created a poster commemorating the Dangermouse masterpiece “The Grey Album”. The composition from the Dangermouse print has been reexamined in “That One”. Jay-Z has been replaced with Barack Obama and the Beatles have morphed into some of the greatest civil rights leaders in U.S. history.

Each ‘History’ print is accompanied by a matching signed and numbered uncut handbill, which measures 6 x 24 inches. The handbill features four smaller versions of Hampton’s ‘THAT ONE’ imagery, with both red and blue backgrounds, intended by the artist as “a visual representation of a bipartisan coalition from solid red states to blue and everything in-between.”

Go on Justin, brush your shoulder off.

PAUL INSECT – IDEA OF FREEDOM

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

Londoner Paul Insect has skipped across the pond for his first U.S. solo show. FIFTY24SF Gallery is playing host to “Idea of Freedom” the latest gallery outing from this street legend.

Paul Insect - Baby Head

The exhibition will display prints, installations and mixed media works with the blanket idea of how “societal burn-out has begun”. Insect is concerned with the hollow ideas of hope, underground, culture and the suffocating hold that technology has on our lives.

Paul Insect - Idea of Freedom - News Box

As publicity for a recent show at Lazarides Gallery in London, Paul Insect placed painted wooden “bullion” bars in various parts of the city. If you are in the Bay area keep your eyes open.
